This is a very special building. It is situated on the shores of Fractal Silver Sea, in the city of Svoroncy. Despite the wonderful sea resonance name, it is a dangerous site. The fractal silver is venomous1 and is not only dangerous fall within it, but the crew of the ships can not go on deck because of toxic gases.

Some think that the path could be avoided by land, after all, there are two only more weeks of travel, but the city located on the shores of Fractal Silver Sea can not depend on caravans of foreign traders.

They decided to establish a continuous flow of goods between Svoroncy and across the sea to the city of Wiliya.

For guidance on the sea, a lookout is permanently in a special cabin at the top of the masts, which can not go out in all the travel. However, harmful mist of fractal silver rise often, preventing the lookout to see anything and leaving the ship blind.

Therefore, to avoid reefs, they can not rely on the lights of a distant lighthouse, nor in the distant stars, but use huge silver horns (treated in a special way to prevent decomposing and to be dangerous to use it) installed in the prows of the ships. The Silver Horns are known as Talayi.

The sound of the Horns is so powerful that can reach the coast smoothly even from Wiliya, located across the Fractal Silver Sea. The Tankomî (singular Tankomûm), huge membranes composited of a special metal alloy, are waiting for the sound, in order to collected and processed.

In hazardous areas the Horns of the ships are constantly bellowing. These sounds and their echoes are picked up by coastal Tankomî.

It isn't an instant method since it not only takes time in his analysis but in order to be able to extract information from the sounds of the Horns have to sound quite some time. For example, to know shallow how the deep seafloor is (enough to enter in a not particularly difficult area), it takes 5 long minutes of uninterrupted bellows. When sailing to destinations not explored in the Fractal Silver Sea, sailors must drop anchors (which include protection of the corrosive silver fractal) and make the Horns of their ships roar for over an hour. Only then it can be get a detailed map of the seafloor.

The "roarer" is normally a skilled musician that had made a career for that position. Sometimes bass trombonist are called to do the work, too.

Disjointed, the information reaching the coastal Tankomî is first compressed, to store the data collected in a more efficiently way.

That is, in the Archives of the Tower (Srisalyi-enyklo), the topographic data collected by ships is stored in shorter sounds, but that have much more meaning: the information that had been extended along minutes can be stored in just 25 seconds.

Although this "compression" has several advantages (including, to analyze information more efficiently and also to store it for future use), has the great disadvantage that emission to long distance through the Horns, is unfeasible , since a large part of the information would be lost due to air disturbances and the large number of built-in information in the "compressed notes" .

Once analyzed carefully, the officers in the Towers (Enyklo) reply to the ship with a smaller version, identified the points, so this provided a "marine map". This map, due to the peculiarities of the system can only be performed offshore, so often the ships delve into the sea to make a sea coast map.

The Horns may also emit very fast signals that serve for communication between the captain of the ship and operator in the Tower.

The simplified version reaches Tankomî of the ship (much smaller than the land, obviously) and automatically analyzes that information.

Once elaborated the marine map, the ship can be controlled — always that there is no incidentals— almost autonomously, without requiring operators of Towers perform any calculation: the ship has in its database the map and occasionally check the ship's position against the marine map, sending a short signal to the coastal Towers, which also respond automatically.

Once the marine maps between Svoroncy and Wiliya were finished, in order to avoid interferences between the ships, each ship has to point their Horns to a small set of Towers to limit the disturbance produced by the Horns to other Horns.

The largest Tankomûm is located in the port of Svoroncy, right at the entrance. The Tower on which is perched is also made from Silver Fractal. It requires great care, since it is the Tankomûm with more listening skills and therefore the Silver Tower suffers greater damage than others (due to vibration).

Despite the economic effort involved for the inhabitants of Svoroncy maintain Fractal Silver Tower and Grand Tankomûm, they do at ease since they are the symbol of the economic prosperity of Svoroncy.

*1: The fractal silver is not like normal silver. As I mentioned it is highly toxic and unstable (becomes very easily on gas) in addition to sneak by any chink in liquid form. However, worked well, is very malleable and can do many useful tools with it.

That's indeed an interesting and elaborate story :) (Smile)
May I ask how is data stored and analysed? Do locals have computers (and in particular, what is their level of technological development)?
