A practice copying a real cone of Ur-Nammu (2047-2030 BCE) writing in sumerian cunneiform.

As this was my first try, with limited time and material, the result is very far from perfect. Also, the original was a cone, not clay tablets. I respected mostly the lines of the words, although all of them were obviously far smaller than mine. You can see how the same signs are written better in the second tablet (specially lugal sign). I did a third tablet with the end of the line 6 but the result was so bad that I won't include it here (also, in that tablet I missed several signs).

I hope to have the oportunity to make a better version.

  • Each sign is
    • a syllabe
    • a predeterminative (as dingir) that is denoted as d: that means that the name that follows is the name of a divinity). Example: dEn-lil2.
    • a postdeterminative (like ki that is denoted as ki: that means that the previous name is the name of a place or city). Example: Urim5ki.
    • a sign-word that expresses a name with more than one syllabe but transcribed with only one sign. Example: dNammu. In a transcription of another language that uses the cunneiform system (old babylonian, for example) when appears a entire word of more than one syllabe but written without separations it means that is a sign like this example. They were called sumerograms.

  • The syllabes are separated by "-" that means that is the same word.
  • Different words are separated by spaces.
  • The numbers after some of the syllabes (Urim5ki) are indications in order to know what sign is used in a certain transliteration. So, the signs ke(1), ke2, ke3, keor ke5, do not refer to the same signs despite being homophones (at least to our knowledge).
    • .
  • Some kings in the Ancient Near East (nowadays also names that generally comes from Hebrew) had theophoric names. This means that its names contain the name of a deity. As the gods are marked by "dingir" personal names may also include within them that mark.
