Called by some people "Abominations" or "The Beautiful Ones", the Nnai ¹ is a race that arouses a sympathetic repugnance to all who know them.

Although for ages it was believed that they were a strange kind of Illithid (for their excellent treatment towards those races), the latest events ²  that occurred in Milegu suggest that the Nnai are a kind of powerful being known as "dem nutkiae" [listen]. The dem nutkiae are a strange group of species of which barely anything is known, but they are extremely powerful beings. Other dem nutkiae species are better known as the Tjrahui and Qwrartu (in other cases, like Varkaus’ Guardians it is not sure if they are dem nutkiae).

Appearance

The Nnai usually hide their crude appearance with their refulgent and thin skin.
Their skin is gray, viscous and always wet. They have no skeleton, and their meat is incredibly light.
They have sharp and poisonous spines that run through the middle of their head (or at least, what would be considered the head in a normal species). Their black eyes blend between the lines of the same color that cover their skin. They do not have a mouth because they consume immaterial Essences ³. Although everything seems to suggest that they float in the air if they are not controlling another being (see below), that is not true. The Nnai support their tendrils slightly on the floor, pushing through very long strides that are weightless. This is what causes their swaying and peculiar gait.
Their stylized movements produce a very attractive and characteristic swing in sight. Countless dances of many other species have tried to replicate these graceful movements, without success.
Why they are considered Abominations (while known as "Beautiful"⁴ in other places) can only be explained by their treacherous and contradictory nature. Their external appearance becomes really beautiful when they try to subjugate many beings in order to devour their Essences.

If a Nnai is observed in circumstances beyond their control (ie, when not subduing some intelligent being to devour their Essence), they will be impersonating assuming the form of another being (the Nnai are shapeshifters beings) or impersonating. In impersonating, the Nnai are placed above the head of his victim, as a helmet, driving its tentacles at the base of the skull. Their victims suddenly just see a black mass that covers their eyes. Moments later, the victim falls into a deep slumber.

Once they properly control their victim, they become invisible (although the victim is clearly visible). So, the Nnai are very dangerous as spies.

This invisibility is not material or magical, but psychological. Like many other similar techniques to achieve invisibiltiy, the technique used by Nnai is based on confusing the mind of the target that wants to hide in order to make them think there is nothing at that location, or that it is so unimportant that it does not matter. Although all are able to "see" the Nnai, very few are able to remember these beings, and if they can remember, it will be in a really fuzzy way. The result is that almost all beings who come to see them discarded the event of conscious memories.

There is also the possibility that an intelligent being is able to see them and even remember it. But they try to attribute this view to any other logical phenomenon, rather than accept the existence of Nnai.

Their ability to go unnoticed (thanks to these skills) have made very difficult the study of the Nnai.
They only have been analyzed by species dedicated to collecting and cataloging other races such as Dussians, the Kdieua [listen ] or Lttbeh Races, specifically Nhel and Sercque. Although Nnai have been associated openly with Interplanar Hunters and of course with other dem nutkiae, they were not known by most species of Milegu before the Interplanar War.

But the invisibility of Nnai does not always work:
If a being who is impersonated by a Nnai is very strong physically, it can wake up from induced slumber and free from the Nnai control. When this happens, the Nnai are exposed to a few moments of danger. The Nnai will be forced to leave the body of their victim hastily to avoid being hurt, because the inner tissue covering the head of his victims is very sensitive (in that area have a lot of nerve endings, used to mentally control their victims).

The Nnai live for immeasurable amounts of time and are immortal in almost all aspects. It is for this reason that "youth" or "old age" is not understood in the normal meaning, but in terms of power: one Nnai is young when it hasn’t absorbed enough Essences.

Expulsion of a body usually only happen to younger individuals (ie Nnai too weak to try that method). Most elders are able to bow down even Dragons!⁵.

Impersonation of bodies almost always aims to devour a significant number of Essences. To achieve this, they plan their strategy well, choosing an individual who can approach a large number of people without creating suspicion, but physically strong enough to withstand the impersonation Nnai for a long time ⁶.
If the superseded dies before the Nnai starts their feast, the Nnai rids of the body. To devour the Essences, the Nnai display themselves(become visible) but not with their real appearance; rather, with a totally different look, depending on the context in which it arises victims acting in one way or another.
They can apparently merge with those whom they have supplanted, carving Nnai facial features on their victim's face and obliterating the elongated part of its "head" with their spines and tentacle legs.
They can also become bipedal or quadrupedal appearance (always with nnai features on the face). These variants are always with the Nnais' incredible beauty ⁷.
As they acquire more and more power, the Nnai need more Essences to feed.


Emanations
It is important to notice the incredible powers that the Nnai have.
The Nnai not only have the ability to take the appeareance of other being, supplanted them or manipulate them at will but also they, as dem nutkiae they have many more powers known poderes as Emanations.

Same to the Tjrhau (that they have nine Emanations), the Nnai can use at their will this powers combining them at very diverse ways. While the Tjrhaui's Emanations were of sound, the Nnai's Emanations are a kind of distorsion that modifies the space.

The first Emanation is one of the most important: their capacity to make thousands of physical copies of themselves. It is fundamental to notice the adjetive "physical", because all of those copies have a real and material body. This Emanation, however, can be emited only by the most powerful Nnai, because it is very dangerous ⁸. Uttering with succesful this Emanation, a Nnai alone can devour thousands of Essences in very little time.
But, when a Nnai with insufficient power tries to control the first Emanation can fail and lose all of his individuality. This can lead to two paths. If within the desaster, the Nnai achieve to increase his power, he eventually be transformed into a "hive Nnai": hundred of identical Nnai, product of the undefined extension of the first Emanation, much less intelligent but still tremendously dangerous.

The "hive Nnai" are used by other Nnai in great battles as a very efficient army.
The other option is that the Nnai fail in the process to achieve more power. So, the first Emanation won't occur, but the Nnai will suffer his effects: his power will be reduced to the minimum and his mind will divide in multiple facets. A faceted Nnai would need to take the slightest decision, hours and hours of intense meditation.
A Nnai who has suffered this process will take centuries to recover.

The second Emanation is the best known and the one that we have already explained: the mental domination. This Emanantion allows them to enslave to great number of beings. This Emanation it is used for the impersonation: in order to induce the lethargy in their victims and also in order to remain "invisible".

The most important Emanation applied in different ways it is the third: with that Emanation they can disturb the Interplanar Fabric and they are capable to introduce it in the normal Planar Space. They sculpt it and make with it their weapons.

The fourth and fifth Emanations are simple variations of the third.
The fourth Emanation is the projection of an Interplanar Fabric inside of a Planar Space (like a liquid or a projectile material).
The fifth Emanation is capable to make "burn" the Interplanar Fabric, providing a great source of energy (although it isn't useful as food).

The Nnai have different disciplines devoted to the development of the sculpture of Interplanar Fabric. Each scholl is specialized in a concrete kind of application of the third, fourth or fifth Emanations.

The sixth Emanation, also mentioned fefore, is the change of shape. The Nnai can, aside of supersed enemies, transformate their body completly to became another being.


Their constructions are peculiar castles of great dimensions made from normal matter covered by a thin layer of Interplanar Fabric, that gives to all the buidings an imprecise and diffuse appearance.

The Nnai uses the rest of their innate powers to survive in the chaotical interplanar world.
For example, the borders of their skin are (seing with microscope) tiny rows with fractal geometry. This is like that because all living beings that inhabits the Interplanar Fabric can be crossed by fragments of irreality that are information holes [the infinite-paradoxes, ∞p, breaks the Interplanar Fabric].

However, the objects with fractal geometry are unaffected by the fragments of irreality ⁹ and are an important barrier [there are more examples of this use to avoid the fragments of irreality like the interplanar dussians cruises that by design have all the exterior part with fractal geometry].

Thus, although can't be determined 100% sure that they are or they aren't dem nutkiae what is clear is that they are Interplanar Creatures adapted to life in the interplanar fabric.

It is for this reason that they can be found anywhere Plane of Milegu and in any environment.










*¹: It is pronunced En-nai with very short "e". Pronunced like "mnai" (listen). Another option can be found here. Nnai means "deceit" in some ancient and unknown language. It is unknown how they are named by themselves.
*²: The chronicler refers to the events inmediatly preceding the end of the Interplanar War. Due to some complicated distortions ocurred in the Milegu during that period, that event happens in the future of the Milegu (but already happened in the "commentator’s of the text" reality). This events remain unknown for my story (by now), so I can’t explain here.
*³:Essences are a type of soul, characteristic of the Milegu: accumulates all available information about an individual and his race (a kind of metaphysical DNA).
*⁴: Other name is "Ssës’udal eghwögedëeyâk", translated as "Beautiful Abominations". These words are in Dussian, an idiom pretty standard in Milegu (at least in terms of "race cataloging" is concerned).
*⁵: The Nnai that have impersonated a dragon are known as Draknnai. The Draknnai are terrifying beings.
Nnai that have made this action will no longer be independent, althought completely control the actions of the dragon. If a dragon managed to escape the iron grip of a Nnai, it will die and the Nnai will remain in a vegetative state (although not forever).
*⁶: When a Nnai impersonates a human being, it takes very little to die (about 2 hours) due to loss of blood and because their brain does not properly handle the vital organs. The times are different for different species: elves for example (as the Säarian Elves) takes between 6 and 12 hours to die, being the preferred race by Nnai.
*⁷: While many people points out to the possibility that Nnai hypnotized to all those who are at a distance of less than 3 kilometers (wich would be very powerful and show the real power of the Nnai), there is every reason to believe that this option is false, being caused by the really beautiful appearance of Nnai at the time of interaction, rather than due to mental distortions.
*⁸ It is relatively dangerous to the Nnai itself and  tremendously dangerous for the rest of the living beings that inhabits the Milegu.
*⁹: Why? Because a fractal is a structure, a geometrical pattern that repeats itself ad infinitum in different scales. The fragment of irreality gest lost in the intricacies of the fractal.



NOTE: Milegu is a meta-universe that pretends to gather other multiverses in order to describes ALL. "All" means here: All-the-possible, and All-the-impossible: like the principle of explosion... so there are multiple paradoxes. It has his own mythology but there are a lot of elements of other mythologies, films, art, books, whatever...
All the history of Milegu and his beings it is collected by some beings called "Lttbeh races" that obey to the "Ones" the most powerful in one of the realities of the Milegu. That Lttbeh races have polimorfical habilities, and this story is a script write for one member of Lttbeh races (Nhel, Sercque, Jynas and Guen/Wen). This is a metanarrative license.
NOTE II: There are some races that are not explained (the links go to my blog, translated automatically to English).
I hope that the context solve the doubts that this can create. As example, Dussians and Kdieua are a powerfull race of the Milegu and act like that: they have plenty known a lot of things, but they act by themselves they are free. Lttbeh races though are races that have the command to across the Milegu to recolect information. Interplanar Hunters are a guild of strange creatures hunters not a race.
